Ghost of Tsushima is Releasing This June

Sly Cooper and inFamous developer Sucker Punch have been letting its latest project Ghost of Tsushima cook for a while, originally announcing the game all the way back during 2017’s Paris Games Week. Now the title finally has a June release date, with a new story driven trailer and various editions to accompany it.

The trailer has a focus on a few key characters, including protagonist Jin, his uncle and mentor Shimura, and the villainous leader of the Mongol army Khotun Khan. The trailer opens with a small scene of Shimura training Jin in the teachings of a samurai, before transitioning to the Mongol armies invasion on the land of Tsushima 15 years later. From there it appears that the Mongol’s earn a largely one-sided victory, with Jin taking it upon himself to obtain vengeance.

There are also some short scenes of gameplay interspersed between the cinematics. As seen in previous trailers, Ghost of Tsushima will be a third-person action open-world game with some elements of stealth as well. While the exact size and scope of the game is still unknown, this is shaping up to be Sucker Punch’s largest project yet.

I'm in two minds: on one hand, I've loved Sucker Punch as a developer since the Sly Cooper series, the setting appeals to my tastes, and visually this might be the best looking game of the generation.

However, the gameplay looks surprisingly dull, at least from what's been shown so far. Combat looks slow and basic and so does the traversal. The latter is especially surprising given how much fun it is to move around in Sly and inFamous.

Regardless of my reservations this is still a must play for me. I just hope it manages to surprise me!
