GOG Doubles Down on Game Preservation by Joining EFGAMP

Preservation of the history of our beloved hobby has been a long-standing piece of GOG's DNA since they first started. The company's name is an acronym for "Good Old Games" after all, and the CD Projekt Red owned storefront started life by publishing classic PC games, often with tweaks added to make them compatible with newer rigs. In recent months, this has been expanded with its official preservation program now in full swing. GOG is now taking things a step further by joining European Federation of Game Archives, Museums and Preservation Projects (EFGAMP).

The snappily-named EFGAMP is a collaboration between more than 20 organistations, including heritage institutions like The Video Game Museum in Rome, and MO5.com in France. Up until now, there was no Polish representation if EFGAMP, but GOG have today announced that they are taking the step of being the first company from their country to join the noble cause.

“GOG was created with video game preservation in mind”, said Maciej Gołębiewski, Managing Director at GOG. “Classic games and the mission to safeguard them for future generations have always been at the core of our work. Over the past decade, we’ve honed our expertise in this area. The GOG Preservation Program, which ensures compatibility for over 100 games and delivers hundreds of enhancements, is just one example of this commitment. We were thrilled to see the Program warmly received not only by our players but also by our partners and the gaming industry as a whole”.

GOG Game Preservation

With game preservation being a hot topic throughout the last year, it's a timely reminder that there are parts of our favourite pastime that could be lost to time if we don't make an effort to keep them alive. It's likely that we will hear more about the subject in 2025 and beyond, and GOG itself is keen to expand the preservation aspect of its work beyond the confines of its own platform.

Gołębiewski expanded on this by saying: “As a European company, we feel a responsibility to lead in preserving gaming heritage. Joining EFGAMP reinforces this commitment. Our next step is to expand institutional collaboration with museums and governmental and non-governmental organizations worldwide. We hope our experience will contribute meaningfully to their efforts. We are also discussing exciting new game preservation projects, which we look forward to sharing soon”.
