Grow Old Fighting in Chronos: Before the Ashes

Originally released as a VR-exclusive title (simply titled Chronos) and acting as a prequel to 2019's Remnant: From the Ashes, Gunfire Games' Chronos: Before the Ashes is out now for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Switch and Stadia. Check out the game's launch trailer above.

Players will take on the role of a young hero tasked with tackling a sprawling labyrinth within a mysterious world in peril (a slightly younger version of the same world we experienced in Remnant: From the Ashes). Well, we say the hero's young; what we mean is the hero STARTS young. You see, each time the protagonist succumbs to the threats of the labyrinth, they must wait a year before tackling it again. This means that, by the time they've respawned and the player regains control of them, they're a year older. As the deaths stack up, so do the years; eventually, the spritely young hero will have become a weathered old warrior—less agile but more than capable in terms of experience and wisdom.

Factor in some good old fashioned souls-like combat, a moody atmosphere and a mystery worth unravelling, and you have yourself an action RPG with an impressive CV. Time will tell how it performs in practise.
