Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era Celebrates Half a Million Copies Sold

Heroes of Might and Magic was a big, genre-defining experience at the time, as titles like Heroes of Might & Magic III became signature for its infinite replayability. Even from my own experience growing up, it was one of the titles that shaped my perspective on videogames, and one of the first experiences I jumped into on PC at a time when consoles were the only "real" way to play games.

Though the franchise was lost to the sands of time, as Ubisoft stopped releasing new experiences and steered away from what made the first few so unique. The latest one, Might & Magic Heroes VII from 2015, was received poorly by critics, though far worse by fans, with its all-time review score on Steam being 54% and the Metacritic User Score a 49.

Just as it seemed like all was lost, since no new titles had been worked on in over a decade, developer Unfrozen, with publisher Hooded Horse, came to the rescue. Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Erawas announced, and promptly received a Steam Next Fest demo that dominated the charts.

Reminiscent of Heroes of Might & Magic III, this pulled at the heartstrings of those seeking the nostalgia of the turn-based strategy fantasy title. It was released on the 30th of April for PC, entering the Steam Early Access and Xbox Game Preview, inviting players to join in on developing the title.

As it stands, Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era intends to remain in an Early Access state for about a year, but as the description states, this might very well change depending on player feedback. So far, it seems like a return to form for the franchise, bringing the strategic gameplay that so many yearned for.

Just mere days after the game's launch, the team announced that the experience had sold over 500,000 copies, which is a massive number considering it was achieved in under 72 hours. The game entered the Steam Top Sellers, being the top paid title of the week above titles like Far Far West, Forza Horizon 6, and even Windrose, only being defeated by Valve's Counter-Strike 2.

We look forward to seeing what else the Unfrozen team will do with Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era, following a more-than-solid start. Thus far, there have been plenty of updates, fixes, and stability improvements to the title, and who knows what's to come once it has been more than just a week since its launch.
