Microtransactions Coming to Diablo III

In a forum post to the Battle.net Diablo III forums, the community manager, Nevalistis, posted up about patch 2.2.0. Due to some users using data mining and focusing on any single word they might find mentioned in any way, they have stated that the following will probably pop up, and what they will mean.

A new currency called "Platinum"
Timed experience boosts
New cosmetic items including wings, non-combat pets, and character portraits
References to stash space and character slot expansions
A new UI interface that references the above information

However, they also stated that those features will not apply to the Americas region, but may in other regions. But any benefits that come with them, such as UI improvements, will still apply worldwide.
