Rocket League to Cease Online Functionality on macOS and Linux (SteamOS)

Rocket League to Cease Online Functionality on macOS and Linux (SteamOS)

Psyonix, developers of smash-hit vehicular football tribute Rocket League, has announced that the game's next update in early March will put an end to its online functionality on macOS and Linux (SteamOS) systems. Justifying its decision, the studio cites difficulty in using "new technologies" while maintaining the support of these operating systems. Instead of holding Rocket League back for all platforms, Psyonix will instead leave macOS and Linux in the dust.

Following the update, this content will still be available

-Local Matches
-Split-Screen Play
-Garage/Inventory (Your existing items will not be removed from your inventory)
-Career Stats
-Replays
-Steam Workshop Maps (Must be downloaded before final patch)
-Custom Training Packs (Must be downloaded before final patch)

The following will not be available

-Online Matchmaking
-Private Matches
-Tournaments
-Rocket Pass
-Item Shop / Esports Shop
-In-Game Events
-Friends List
-Clubs
-News Panel
-New Custom Training Packs
-New Steam Workshop Maps
-Leaderboards
-League Rankings

It's an unfortunate smack-in-the-face for many Rocket League players. As a consolation, all macOS and Linux owners also own PC copies of the game; Bootcamp (on Mac) or Steam's Proton App (on Linux/SteamOS) should be able to help these non-PC owners play the functional PC version on their respective systems. It's a move suggested, although not officially endorsed, by Psyonix.

The update will release in "early March" according to the public statement from Psyonix. Following the update's release, Rocket League will —essentially— be dead on macOS and Linux.
