Team Cherry Confirms Hollow Knight: Silksong Release Date Delay

Hollow Knight fans have been waiting for Team Cherry to break its silence about the long-awaited and highly anticipated sequel of its hit debut Metroidvania title, and now, we finally have some details. Matthew Griffin, marketing and publishing lead of Team Cherry, announced on Twitter that Hollow Knight: Silksong will not launch in the first half of 2023 as originally planned.

“We’re excited by how the game is shaping up, and it’s gotten quite big, so we want to take the time to make the game as good as we can,” Griffin wrote.

What was originally intended as a DLC expansion for Hollow Knight has not only become a sequel but also a massive undertaking it seems. Though we can’t possibly know what “quite big” fully entails, we do know it’s large enough to push the release window back to an undisclosed date.

This delay was expected by many fans who could sense that the lack of communication, trailers, or promotion was not a good sign in the days leading up to a potential release. And though it’s not good news, it seems that Hollow Knight’s community is grateful for any information rather than nothing at all.

Hollow Knight: Silksong was first announced in February 2019 for Nintendo Switch and PC, and in 2022, it was confirmed for Xbox and PlayStation consoles as well as Game Pass on day one. Other than the title's protagonist being Hornet, one of the iconic characters you meet in the first game, not much more is known about Silksong in terms of gameplay.

Griffin closed with, “Expect more details from us once we get closer to release.” At the earliest, this could mean that fans will hear from Team Cherry again sometime in Q3 or Q4 2023. Early 2024 is another possibility as well but either way, the general sentiment from the community seems to be a resounding, “Take your time!”

When it’s ready, Hollow Knight: Silksong will launch on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
