Zynga Loses Half Its Userbase

Zynga Loses Half Its Userbase

Zynga, a company synonymous with the popularisation of social games like FarmVille, has reported a decrease in their daily and monthly userbase by half this past year.

In the start 2013, the social game developer reported a daily active userbase of almost 52 million, but their first quarter report shows that number falling to 28 million--almost in half. Things are even bleaker with their monthly users; Zynga's monthly active userbase has steadily declined from 253 million to 123 million over the past year.

While it's impossible to draw a conclusion from what's effectively one data point, the sharp drop in numbers for a major player like Zynga may be indicative of a growing disinterest with traditional browser and mobile-based social games, which has a tendency to find a model that works and use it repetitively.

However, all may not be lost for Zynga. While numbers have fallen dramatically, their most recent figures are up over a million daily users since what they reported in December, implying that the situation may have been turned around.
