World War Z x The Walking Dead DLC Review

World War Z x The Walking Dead DLC Review

When it comes to videogame enemies, zombies probably stand up there as one of the most constantly killed opponents you’ll face. This makes it hard for any new title or DLC to really stand out, but a proven method is to combine two well-known series into one title. With that, we have the new World War Z x The Walking Dead DLC for World War Z.

At a glance, these two properties couldn’t be more different: World War Z Zekes are fast-moving, but relatively fragile. Meanwhile, the Walkers from The Walking Dead are slow, but durable, which creates a very different style of gameplay. However, before we get into that, let's just look at what remains the same.

First things first, the special zombie types and the weapons all remain mostly the same. There are some unique weapons and skins based on the show, like Michonne's katana, but for the most part, it’s the same guns you usually see. The classes in the DLC are also the same mix as you see in the main game. In one sense, it’s a bit disappointing that there aren’t more differences, but on the other hand, it helps to keep the two games feeling connected and makes it less jarring when you swap campaigns.

However, some differences help the DLC feel like its own thing. As I said, the zombies are slower, but they’re also much tougher than the other infected. If you’re attacked by a horde, you need to place your shots carefully to make sure you take down as many as you can. There are also three unique chapters and one new special Zeke that can also appear in the campaign: the Spike Walker. Finally, you also have the option to play as one of four heroes from The Walking Dead, each with voice lines.

Yes, the World War Z x The Walking Dead doesn’t exactly change much, but it’s a fun bit of extra content that’s just different enough to be interesting. The gameplay also remains as strong as it does in the main game, with the Walkers still being susceptible to the same tactics and skills that the Zekes from the main game are. It’s very easy to rack up some impressive kill counts, and it’s fun to be surrounded by a slow-moving horde rather than sprinters.

If I have any issue, it’s more that the DLC doesn’t really introduce all that much to the game. Yes, you get some new areas, but the introduction of special zombies that sprint around compared to the slow-moving horde might turn away Walking Dead purists. Unfortunately, both Michonne and Rick’s actors didn’t return for the DLC to voice their characters, but the replacements do fine. Also, if you’re a fan of the fast-moving hordes, you might be a bit let down by the shambling zombies that lead to defence sections taking just a little longer.

If you enjoy World War Z, but have found repeat playthroughs to be getting a bit dull, then this DLC can be a real shot in the arm. If you’re a Walking Dead fan, then there’s a bit of fun here, but I wouldn’t entirely recommend buying the game just for this DLC.

World War Z x The Walking Dead (Reviewed on Windows)

This game is good, with a few negatives.

World War Z x The Walking Dead is a solid DLC, but it’s not enough for new players to buy the game.
