So I Tried... The Remake of the End of the Greatest RPG of All Time
Each edition of So I Tried… sees me trying a game that I have never played before. Will I find something new to love? Will I find something new to despise? I'll take a full half hour, no matter how bad it gets or how badly I do, to see if this is the game for me. I love role-playing games, so when I saw the trailer for The Remake of the End of the Greatest RPG of All Time, I was intrigued. I had to see if this game really lives up to the claim stated right in the name.
What I thought it was
Based on the footage that we see in the trailer, The Remake of the End of the Greatest RPG of All Time seems like a blend of a puzzle game with RPG-style battles. It looks like you begin the game in the final boss fight at the end of The Greatest RPG of All Time, and where you go after that fight is over, I’m not sure, but obviously the game can’t end there. The game trailer shows characters exploring a dungeon where odd things happen, like the screen flipping upside down, so I'm guessing we will have to figure out what is going on here.

What it actually is
The Remake of the End of the Greatest RPG of All Time isn’t really an RPG at all; instead, it follows the story of two student game developers who have bitten off more than they can chew. The game starts with you thrown into the final boss fight with no idea of how anything works since your attacks do nothing and the enemy is dealing massive damage. Oh, and don’t heal, because that hurts you too… We need some help; this fight is so unfair! Once you are defeated, the game changes focus.
The story deals with the struggles that they encountered with game design, all while giving you hints on how to beat the game. The developers have scribbled notes into the game manual, video clips that you find have clues, and an unreleased amateur documentary. You need all the information you can get since you don’t know how to control the members of your party or their backstory. So you explore the dungeon you are in and solve puzzles to learn more about what you need to do and what is going on. This game reminds me of playing TUNIC and not fully knowing what I needed to do next.

Will I keep playing?
I do want to learn more about these two game designers and their story, but damn, this game is challenging. It’s tricky to figure out what exactly the game needs from me to get past the various obstacles and progress. I will try it a bit more and hope that I have an aha moment where things click, and I know what is going on. Though, I have to say that the game isn’t the RPG that I was expecting…
