The Best Characters For Each Play Style In Mortal Kombat 11

Of the ‘Top three’ fighting games (Street Fighter, Tekken, and MK), Mortal Kombat 11 is the most recent and this gives it an element of freshness in the eyes of many players. With its new storyline, returning characters, and ever-pleasant fatalities, Mortal Kombat has captured the imagination of most fighting game enthusiasts, and there are very few tournaments that don’t have a Mortal Kombat competition.

For this reason, many new players have come into the fold and are trying their hands at the game. If this is you, finding out tips on how to play is probably your biggest priority. But, how about your character choice?

Most importantly, your choice of character more often than not determines your play style. This is the fashion in which your character deals with battles. For instance, in Mortal Kombat 11, Cetrion is known for her ability to keep opponents at bay. Naturally, you can be a lot more aggressive, but her natural tools and skillset are perfect for battling from range.

There are three major types of fighting game styles recognised by most gamers:

  • Grappling
  • Zoning
  • Rushdown

Once you are settled on which of these styles suits you best, picking the best character within that class is the next step.

mk11 1

Best grappling character in MK11

Before picking a character, it might be a good idea to confirm how well regarded they are in a tier list. For instance, you can consider this MK11 character tier list to give you a good idea of how suitable a character is for battle. The first play style being considered is ‘The Grappler.’ This is a playstyle that usually makes use of command grabs and throws to win against an opponent. Characters that possess this playstyle are usually large and slow. Therefore, they have a strong defense, deal insane damage, and are difficult to break down. On the other hand, they are, as mentioned earlier, pretty slow, which means they aren’t quite fast enough to react to certain situations in a fight.

The Best - Geras

MK11 2

Geras is the loyal enforcer of the game’s main antagonist, Kronika. He possesses the strength of gods and can recover from wounds in a matter of seconds due to his mastery of the sands of time. Besides, he is impervious to death, having died many times over. He is also brilliant as he consistently learns from his past lives and can put these tactics to use in a fight. Geras is a top-tier character whose grabs deal a lot of damage, and his sand trap ability is quite handy against opponents that run around a lot.

Substitute- Sheeva

MK11 3

The Kween, as she is fondly called, is another pretty cool character. As you know, her ground pound move is a nightmare to most players, and there have even been a few calls for it to be nerfed. Furthermore, she has a move called ‘Death from above’ where she takes off and disappears off the screen before landing on the opponent. The move can be delayed giving the user an even better advantage.

Best rushdown character in MK11

A rushdown character is one that thrives on attacking the opponent and leaving no room for defense. They are typically nippy characters who might not deal too much damage but can dish out several hits. Think about a character like Cammy in Street Fighter, whose offense is the scourge of many players, and her ability to leave the opponent with little to no space is quite legendary.

The Best - Liu Kang

MK11 4

Liu Kang is well known as the principal protagonist in the Mortal Kombat series. He is a powerful warrior who is Earthrealm’s protector as he defeated Shang Tsung in the first Mortal Kombat game. Even when Shao Kahn tried to pull a fast one in the second installment of the game, Liu Kang was again on hand to defeat the tyrant. In MK11, Liu Kang is pretty mobile, which helps him get into opponents’ faces and deal a series of combos that sometimes feel unstoppable. On top of that, Liu Kang can also be used as an excellent zoning character thanks to his high and low fireball, keeping other fighters at bay. This ability to seamlessly switch between playstyles is unique and immensely useful.

Substitute - Fujin

MK11 5

Fujin is Raiden’s younger brother and is a powerful wind user. In the game, his quick moves, kicks, and tornado make him a formidable adversary for anyone. Just watch how pro player, Hayatei, used the character at Dragon Temple to see just how incredible a character Fujin is.

Best zoning character in MK11

Zoning characters are perfect for players who attack from range. They are usually equipped with powerful projectiles that help them keep adversaries away. While some players hate this playstyle due to its emphasis on defense, it is still a legitimate way of getting wins against other characters. Zoning characters are great at blocking and have more life than other characters. Besides, they also have great projectiles.

The Best - Cetrion

MK11 6

Cetrion is an Elder goddess and the daughter of Kronika. She is also the sister of the antagonist, Shinnok. She is the goddess of virtue and light while her brother was in charge of corruption and decay. She is the perfect zoning character due to her powerful projectiles. One of her signature moves, Hell’s wrath, lets her rise into the air and fire diagonal beams at her prey. In addition, she has the tendril pull move, which uses plants to grab hold of the opponent and slam them into the ground.

Substitute - Shang Tsung

MK11 7

The ancient magician is well-known to all Mortal Kombat fans. In MK11, he is a pretty decent zoner, and his corpse drop move can be a real hassle to deal with.

With this basic knowledge of the best characters for different playstyles, you should have a better grasp of the game and maybe start winning a couple of games.
