Virgin Returning to Gaming?

Richard Branson is at it again, stirring up the communities with his fingers in all the pies.

Virgin seem to be coming into the gaming market a new website suggests. Armed with only a logo and a countdown, the new site http://www.virgingaming.com/ has a counter that ties in to the same time as the finish of E3.....coincidence I think not!

The biggest rumour right now is that Virgin will be announcing a streamed gaming service to tie in with their cable network.

Im sure our team at E3 will find out more and have details for you as it comes, but for now what do you think it could be?

This will be interesting. They made some awesome games for the Sega Mega Drive - a possible competitor console maybe?

The thing is, it would make sense. All of the console giants have stated that their consoles have still got a few years in them. With one from Virgin, it would be way ahead of the rest.

Considering the broadband infrastructure they already have, a streamed service like OnLive would be something I could see them unveiling, but id be very surprised if they have had something like that in development and been able to keep it secret. E3 will reveal all ive no doubt!

Yeah i think something like onlive is possibly more likely than a new console. the console market is already established, would take something pretty special to break into that market tbh and even if it was special people already have their gaming loyalties so to speak, think it would end up fading into obscurity. the onlive system is a new idea, easier to break into with a new system id imagine.

New console? I very very much doubt it, on-live style streaming? again it's doubtful, what is feasable is probably a digital distribution platform, possibly a rental service for games like netflix/love-film or even a return of dedicated servers like back in the days of blueyonder.

I would have thought they'd stick to a role like publisher, and maybe the countdown was to announce a new game that they'd happen to be publishing.

I retract my previous statement. I can't see a new console/competitor to OnLive going well for them. A new console isn't needed as has already been said here, and OnLive hasn't yet proven itself, so there's no way of knowing whether or not it'll take off financially. A somewhat risky move for them.

OnLive hasn't yet proven itself

It pretty much has in the US quality wise, the beta consoles theyve sent out have all had a massive reception, they actually guarantee over there that within 1000 miles of a datacentre you will have a perfect gaming experience on it. The technology really is amazing behind it, i cant see how it wont do well. Its just the Brits that don't believe in it to be honest for some reason :)

I don't believe in it because I like to own my games, not rent them and be able to play without an Internet connection if I so choose (DRM notwithstanding). :)

The only reason I don't believe in it is the fact that my internet connection is really ****. If I had access to a stable connection I would probably go for OnLive but mine drops out all the time causing webpages to hang and then not load.

Platform could mean console or hosting program, so it's still fairly open.
