What Are the Rarest CS Skins in Cases?

Counter-Strike has one of the most valuable item economies in gaming, with a host of rare weapon skins that players can receive from cases. There are a number of ways that players can get skins, but the gulf in value between the more common skins and some of the rarest is surprisingly large.

Almost every gamer is likely to be aware of the game Counter-Strike (CS), and its sequels Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) and Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) as pinnacles of the competitive first-person shooter genre. But what every gamer might not know is that CS has one of the most valuable skin economies in gaming. The valuation of the entire skin market for CS is approximated at between 3 and 4.5 million US dollars, which is a huge amount considering that these skins are purely digital vanity items, with no functional gameplay effects.

While the market itself might be valued at several million, the value of individual skins varies wildly. The commonest skins are worth only a few cents, and the most expensive and rarest are valued at millions of dollars individually. Players eagerly anticipate opening skin crates on platforms like GGSkins for the chance to acquire some of these rarer skins, in order to resell them, hope they appreciate in value, or simply to enjoy how they look.

Let's look a little closer at what exactly cases are and how players can get them, as well as at some of the rarest possible drops that cases can provide.

What Exactly Are CS Skin Cases?

Simply put, skin cases are a container that can be opened to unlock a skin for the opener. There is a range of different sorts of cases available, and each one has its own set of skins with associated probability chances of acquiring them. When a case is opened, an item from among the case pool is chosen randomly, with the rarer items obviously having a much lower chance of being received.

How Are Cases Acquired By Players?

There are a handful of ways that players can get cases, with the most common being:

  • Purchased through the Steam Community Market from other players.
  • By making trades with other players.
  • Through a third-party trading platform like SkinsGG.
  • From playing the game.

The types of cases that are dropped change over time, and this sees the prices of those cases, and the items contained in them, go up and down according to the supply and commonality. In particular, cases that are discontinued and no longer drop are among some of the most widely sought after by collectors.

How Skin Rarity is Organised

The rarity of skins is organised, as you might expect, by how likely they are to appear. Most cases contain a progression of rarity that follows this formula:

  • Common (gray).
  • Uncommon (green).
  • Rare (blue).
  • Epic (purple).
  • Red (legendary).
  • Gold (mythic).

Within these categories, there are some other factors that can change how valuable or sought-after a skin might be, these include things like how worn the skin looks, how rare the patterning is and a variety of other factors. This means that even if two players both hit the unlikely mythic drop from a crate, the odds of their skins both being valued the same are statistically improbable.

Rarest of the Rare

Now that we know what skins are and how they are acquired, let's look at a couple of the rarest skins that are currently possible to get from crates.

AWP Dragon Lore

Even if you have never looked at a CS skin or played the game, you might still have heard of this skin. To get this skin now, you would need to find a Cobblestone Souvenir crate, which has become exceedingly rare, and then hit the less than 1% chance of pulling the skin. Many players consider this one of the ultimate skin drops, and for some CS fans, chasing the dragon has a much more literal meaning.

The Blue Gem Karambit

The famous Blue Gem Karambit is another of those fantastical dreams that those who open CS cases have. A basic Karambit skin is itself not all that rare, with only a 1 in 1,925 chance. But to hit a Blue Gem Karambit, the chances are approximated as being closer to 1 in 131 million. Never tell me the odds, right?

We sort of mentioned this skin earlier, as the single existing example of this skin is valued at over $US 1.5 million, as the owner has refused that amount publicly, and there are rumours that they have privately turned down higher amounts.

Karambit Doppler Sapphire

Dropping out of the clouds of fancy and back to reality, another very rare model is the Karambit Doppler Sapphire, which only has an approximate 1 in 27 million chance to drop. Which, if it did, would easily be valued at over $US 4,000.

Final Thoughts

The skins we listed have a vanishingly small chance to be acquired by players, but there are lots of, still very rare, skins that players unbox every day. For most players, acquiring a rare skin from a case is just a boost to their digital drip, but for the lucky few, it can be a dramatic windfall.
