What Makes a Good RPG?

If you are one of the many who love nothing more than playing RPGs (role-playing games) then you are bound to have your opinion on what makes these games great. That being said, we believe that there is some common ground that spans across the classic titles.

Certainly, when looking at just how popular RPGs are, it is clear that people are huge fans of temporarily escaping reality and becoming someone new. It could be a Japanese themed RPG, a Western, or a fantasy theme. Regardless, these games provide hours and hours of entertainment and escape. Western RPGs are so popular that they have even spilt over into online casinos with the likes of the Last Chance Saloon slot game. Let’s take a look at some of the features that these great games all share.

A great story

This is, arguably, the most important part of any great RPG. These games see players immersing themselves for hours on end. The lack of a decent storyline means that there is no chance of anyone giving this sort of time to a game.

The story can’t be one-dimensional. There has to be plenty of twists and turns along the way. Without these, a player will soon get bored and simply move onto another, more entertaining RPG. Let’s be honest, there are certainly plenty to choose from. An example of an RPG that tells a great story can be found in The Witcher 3.

Characters to care about

Having an appealing storyline is only one part of creating a great RPG. For players to really get into the games there have to be some great characters. These characters have to be ones that players can understand and ones that they can even care about.

While there are some RPGs with pre-made characters, the best ones give you full control. They allow you to decide on the gender of the character, the race of a character, how they look, and what skills they possess. Players are far more likely to care for a character that they have created themselves.

A place to explore

Of course, it goes without saying that the best RPGs come with amazing settings. The settings are presented to players with some great graphics and thought has gone into exactly how every element looks and why it has been included.

To keep players entertained, the greatest RPGs go beyond just the basic settings. They offer plenty of places to discover and explore. Players love to fully immerse themselves by exploring every single inch of a map.

Sound matters too

As well as looking great, the best RPGs sound amazing too. The sound effects provide an extra dimension to the same so that players can feel that they are really there. It could be the sound of rainfall, or the shots being fired from a gun, the best RPGs make sure these sound effects are up to scratch.

Alongside great sound effects, RPGs also need a soundtrack to match. The soundtrack needs to be memorable. It also needs to make sense and connect with a players’ emotions.

Final thoughts

Whatever your theme of choice, we truly believe that these are the factors that go into making an RPG great rather than just another title. The popularity of RPGs makes them extremely important to developers. They need to ensure that their next release is one that sees long-term success and doesn’t just fall by the wayside.

When developers get these games right, players will always keep on returning for more.
