Why I'm Excited for Star Fox On the Switch 2

Star Fox was a rail shooter game that was released in 1993 for the Super Nintendo (or Starwing in the UK) where you play as Fox McCloud, a space pilot in the Lylat star system. Flying the Arwing, you lead your team into battle against the invading alien force made up of tanks, fighter ships, and huge space fighters.

I love everything about that game: the crazy-looking polygon graphics, the awesome soundtrack, and all the members of the flight crew that you are commanding. Star Fox is the reason why I always need to use inverted controls when I’m playing a title where I’m flying! I’ve spent many hours on those series, so my muscle memory is locked in with that control scheme.

For its time, the look of Star Fox was wonderful. Using the Super FX microchip, it has visuals and special effects that we never saw back then. Star Fox felt incredibly realistic as you flew through space in three dimensions, fighting the alien forces, flying through asteroid belts, and taking out the enemy defence systems as you made your way to planet Venom to take out their leader, Andross.

Instead of remaking the original Star Fox, Nintendo is doing a remaster of Star Fox 64, which was released on the Nintendo 64 in 1997. In this title, you not only piloted the Arwing but also a land vehicle called the Landmaster, and an underwater craft called the Blue-Marine. This new game isn’t exactly the same as that release, as it is adding new story content and will have a multiplayer battle mode to play, but it looks to be a cinematic retelling of that classic.

The look of the game is very different from what we have seen from the series before, and gives off a CG-realistic vibe instead of the Fox that we saw in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. It is incredibly detailed, with every hair on Peppy Hare being sharp and clear, though Slippy Toad looks a little odd. I do love the look of the environments you will be flying through; the water looks amazing! At least they are doing something very different.

The timing of the game makes sense; Nintendo has now announced this game since Fox does make an appearance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and a lot of the kids who would have seen him really don’t know where he is from other than Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Nintendo Switch. Chances are, only a few have actually had a chance to play the original title or the follow-up that was on the N64 and the Nintendo 3DS. So the current moment is the perfect time to introduce them to the Lylat Star System.

I am super excited to try out Star Fox on the Nintendo Switch 2 when it releases in June this year. I’m hoping that if people show interest and check out the game, Nintendo will consider releasing an all-new Star Fox title in the near future. My nostalgia for this series is huge, so I can’t wait to hop back in the Arwing and fly through space in this retelling of a game I love so much. I have to admit that I am looking forward to not using the N64 controller though…
