It’s not often you find an online, free-to-play FPS on mobile that you actually want to keep playing. In the case of Guns of Boom you get a solid game that is actually a joy to play even if it is on mobile.
Guns of Boom puts you in a four versus four match where you must battle it out for victory across a number of different maps in a gorgeous looking game. What makes the title so impressive is how fluid the controls feel for a touch screen game. You control your character’s movement and aiming by dragging your finger across the screen but actions such as shooting are automatic once a target is in range. You have a few buttons to perform additional actions such as healing, throwing a grenade, aiming down sight or changing weapons but the focus is always on shooting your enemies. Nothing takes away from that focus and if anything you are pushed more into the zone but the placement of on screen prompts and HUD elements.
As there is such a strong focus on running and gunning down your enemies it is good to know that the maps are designed to help with that. Each of the wide array of maps has plenty of paths and chokepoints that funnel players into encounters. Paths to flank the enemy team or set up for a long range takedown are also present meaning you can, when possible, really work as a team. This level of design and thought within maps and gunplay is not often found on mobile and makes Guns of Boom a standout title in the genre.
Now of course there is the option to spend real money to unlock more weapons, items and upgrades but you never really feel like you need to. Sure, the game provides health kits and grenades in a finite number , requiring purchases to refill but this can be done without spending any real money and still feel fair. Not only that but the game offers you plenty of chances to earn additional credits through challenges, actions and adverts. The general progression is all tied towards playing more matches as well. The odd challenge might require you to stab a few players or blow them up but everything rolls into that core mechanic: shooting people in the head.
What makes this title such a standout is not just the design or the fast and near flawless matchmaking and connection, but rather it's fast and responsive experience. From the moment the app opens to your first kill there is next to no time spent waiting around. It’s moment to moment action that keeps you in the game and doesn’t beat you down with unneeded tutorials or screen prompts. It’s all about you, your gun and the players you want to shoot. What’s more, the game sync's progress without fail meaning you can jump from one device to another without issues.
With solid controls, a good design and tons of fun to be had it's hard not to recommend Guns of Boom. If you are looking for a mobile FPS experience that rivals even the most popular titles then look no further than Guns of Boom. Seriously, give it a download and check it out, you won’t be disappointed.
Excellent. Look out for this one.
