Often you can find a small title that is a lot of fun with an addictive core gameplay loop. SpaceTapTap caught my eye when I was looking around the App Store and I jumped in with next to no expectations. What I found was a title that was beautiful and fun with a learning curve that didn’t prevent enjoyment.
The objective within the game is to travel up the screen for as long as you can, stacking up points as you do so. Space is limitless so you can expect to see a lot of the stars and planets during your travels. Now the main gameplay loop is that you can change the direction of your ship by latching onto and rotating around points dotted around the screen.
This means that you touch and hold the screen to attach to a point and then keep rotating around it. Once you let go of the screen your ship will fly off towards its new heading in relation to said rotation. A bit confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it mechanic is surprisingly easy to master.
During your travels through space you might be lucky enough to pick up some gems which will help you to unlock new ships. The ships that can be unlocked in SpaceTapTap are nothing more than cosmetic, but as each ship has a different colour energy trail it is a lot of fun watching them. The colours from the trails tie into the style of the game really nicely. Flat, bright colours, with a smooth framerate throughout. The sound design also has a high level of polish and is strong throughout. The attention to detail is brilliant and even though it is a small title it has a stunning visual and audio style.
The one tap gameplay of SpaceTapTap does mean that you can pick up and play in short or long bursts. Slowly pushing further into space to earn a higher score and hopefully not crash your ship along the way. There are limits to how far to the left and right you can take your ship but other than that and the odd object in your way it’s clear sailing. This title is definitely one that is designed for the long game where you will always want to outdo yourself with every play.
SpaceTapTap is a fun little game. There might not be much in the way of different content but what is present in the game is enough to keep you hooked for sometime. If you want a lightweight title on your device to pick up and enjoy from time to time i recommend this title. SpaceTapTap is a lot of fun and a stylish game at that.
This game is great, with minimal or no negatives.
