All of the Changes Coming to Arena in League of Legends Season 2 Act 1: Pandemonium

All of the Changes Coming to Arena in League of Legends Season 2 Act 1: Pandemonium

The new League of Legends Dev Update delved into some gameplay elements that players can expect, and one of the sections was Arena. This fan-favourite game mode has been in extended testing for a while, giving players the chance to enjoy it and see its overall feasibility in the long run.

With Arena slowly growing stale for a group of players, Riot Games is looking to shake it up a bit and see what sorts of changes will better resonate with players overall. Now, the first set of changes is that Arena itself is going to be getting a few extra additions, so we'll touch on those first.

First up, a new map called the Petricite Grove is going to enter rotation. This is going to offer a few stage hazards, and it was shown off during the gameplay trailer released before the launch of the Dev Update. The mechanics include bombs that you can hit and roll at enemies, and using these strategically should reward the players.

There's also a new feature arriving called Augment Levels, where players will be able to upgrade their favourite Augments. So, for those who got the Prismatic Fan the Hammer, for instance, it will have an upgradable version that fires more missiles per shot.

The way this system will be implemented is that, once players have picked two Augments, they'll be able to start using future rolls to upgrade their favourite ones instead of adding new ones to the list. This should offer more playable variety with favourite augments, emphasising builds that synergise with augments much more, as players will be able to focus more on one specific mechanic.

Alongside this, players will be getting the opportunity to enjoy more Guests of Honor, with 20 reworked ones coming up. This includes characters like Nocturne and Shaco, which players will be able to vote for and keep the per-match gameplay far more varied.

Meanwhile, there will be 30 new Augments arriving, giving players far more options to pick from. Some of these are being ported over from ARAM: Mayhem, while others are brand-new for the Arena update overall.

Now that we've spoken about the base gameplay elements, it's time to talk a bit about the new Events arriving in Arena. In total, there are going to be three events — in the form of major updates — that will change the overall gameplay drastically, to see which direction best resonates with players.

Kicking off on Patch 26.10, a new three-player mode is coming to the game mode, where players will instead team up with more teammates, reducing the overall team size to six. There will be six teams of three players each, giving everyone a chance to create more synergies across champions, and offering the benefit of fighting against the same teams several times, emphasising learning playstyles.

Three by Six (which is the official update name) will stay for three patches, ending by 26.14 (if my calculations are correct), and it will be replaced by gamemode-wide Bravery. This mode will essentially force everyone to pick random champions rather than pick the optimised, best-in-slot characters like Bel'veth, Ryze, or other frustrating champions to fight against.

Bravery will come with optional Crowd Favorites for players to pick, still, in case they don't want to roll the dice, but this should keep the gameplay more varied. The plan is to reduce the amount of min-maxers playing the strongest champions every round, which has been a prominent problem in League of Legends' casual game modes since the first release of URF in 2014, and continues to this day with game modes like Arena and Brawl.

The last event of the Season will be called Swift Arena, in which teams will be limited to four instead. This will be a bit more strategic, as players will have to fight the same teams more often and get to learn their playstyles, keeping the overall gameplay a bit shorter and more accessible in small bursts.

All of these events will keep Arena's gameplay more unique and exciting, and Riot Games will be using the learnings from these to better refine Arena into gameplay elements that will better resonate with the audience. The first one kicks off on Patch 26.10, on the 13th of May 2026, barring some last-minute changes or delays.
