Echoes of Aincrad Shares a Trailer for the One-Life Game Mode

Game Studio Inc. and Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc. have shared a brand-new trailer for the upcoming Echoes of Aincrad title. This time, we get a look at the Death Game Mode, the one-life run mode that the anime it's based on, Sword Art Online, is known for.

The trailer is a short one-minute-long look at combat sequences that players will take on throughout the realm of Aincrad. It focuses more on the one-life mode, though we don't learn much more than we already knew from previously marketing materials.

That said, the trailer, posted on the official BANDAI NAMCO Europe YouTube channel, has been receiving some controversy regarding the decision to hide this mode behind higher editions. For those who want to experience Echoes of Aincrad and feel the weight of permanent death on their first, they'll need to buy a higher edition of the game than the base one.

Priced at £74.99 and £94.99 for the Deluxe and Ultimate editions, Echoes of Aincrad will be locking the early unlock of the Death Game Mode behind these editions. It's been a controversial take, since Sword Art Online's main premise is focused on the no respawning element, but it's the decision the team has gone for.

The game mode will also unlock for free after completing your first run of Echoes of Aincrad, though for many, that defeats the purpose, since they'll know the sort of content that awaits them. If you're really looking to enjoy the Death Game Mode early, the only options are to purchase a higher edition or manually delete save files and start over.

For everyone else who won't be forking over for the higher editions, Echoes of Aincrad is priced at £54.99, with the game starting on the 9th of July 2026.
