Facebook Acquires Oculus VR

Facebook Acquires Oculus VR

Mark Zuckerberg has announced on his Facebook page that Facebook have acquired Oculus VR, the company which is creating the Oculus Rift.

No figures were mentioned, but given the fact that developers are getting very excited for the Oculus Rift, you can bet it was worth many millions in cash and likely stock. It is a smart move by Facebook to get in on the ground floor of virtual reality, with the upcoming Rift, Sony's Morpheus and Google Glass.

Zuckerberg explained that Oculus will operate completely independently inside Facebook, able to complete their own aims and goals. Rather than do anything to hinder the company, he claims they will help to accelerate the immersive gaming plans Oculus have. But that's not all.

After games, we're going to make Oculus a platform for many other experiences. Imagine enjoying a court side seat at a game, studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face-to-face -- just by putting on goggles in your home.

- Mark Zuckerberg, CEO, Facebook

He elaborates, describing that eventually people will not just interact with friends online, but have "experiences" with them.  It's clear he has plans for more than just games, with this technology, which is the right attitude to have.
