Fake Cuphead Game Removed From iOS App Store

It is common place in the video game industry to have IP’s stolen, repackaged, and sold off as bootleg copies and is a never ending battle for indie and AAA studios alike. What makes the Cuphead ripoff on iOS so interesting is that the thieves went as far as releasing the game under the name of Studio MDHR, the original developers of Cuphead.

"We constantly find Cuphead ripoff games on the iOS storefront, but this is the first time someone has tried to directly sign up under our actual company name and sell a fraudulent version of our game. It’s unfortunate because it’s time consuming for us to have to keep contacting the storefronts to get them to remove these frauds. We don’t want fans to think it’s our stuff — because it isn’t and it could possibly be malicious."

Cuphead went through many iterations during its development lifetime and when it finally released on 29th September 2017 it was an immediate success. Players were won over with its rubber hose animation and early 90’s cartoon style, so much so, that the title won three awards at The Game Awards and has sold over one million copies.

Check out Tyler Schurwan’s review of Cuphead here and see why it earned a score of 9.5.
