League of Legends Role Quests — Everything You Need to Know

League of Legends Role Quests — Everything You Need to Know

For the upcoming 2026 Season 1 Act 1: For Demacia, Riot Games is looking to shake up a lot of the way the game works with League of Legends. With notoriously weak roles getting substantial buffs, the team is looking to make it easier for some inconsequential lanes, like sometimes Top and ADC could feel, to be more part of the experience and dictate more of the matches.

The way Riot Games is approaching this balancing challenge is by creating unique Role Quests for every lane, which is the same mechanic we've seen in Jungle and Support for a while, now. With this, balance changes can affect the role that they're meant to play without causing a ripple effect throughout the entire game, all the while making targeted changes that should work across the champion pool available.

So, let's talk a bit about the newest addition to shake up the Summoner's Rift: Role Quests.

What Are Role Quests?

Top, Mid, and ADC will now be receiving unique Role Quests, which is the same system that Support and Jungle have had for a while. Essentially, by completing specific tasks, each role will be able to get a late-game buff that should correspond to the way the lane is supposed to be played as a whole.

To partake in the Role Quests, players will need to engage with the game: kill minions, champions, turret platings, turrets, and Epic monsters. Doing this will work towards unlocking your role-specific buff, so while it won't be a big shake-up in the gameplay department until unlocking it, the same can't be said for when you do get it.

To encourage players to stick to their roles and play their intended lanes, progress towards the RoleQuest will be faster whenever playing in the designated lane. Meaning that for those looking to do a swap of lanes, it'll be important to do so within Champion Select in order to have the proper rewards being sent out.

Upon completion, players will get access to their unique reward, often dished out through the Role Quest slot. But what that works for depends entirely on the lane you're playing, so we're going to take a deep dive on all of the different lanes and how the Role Quest works, starting from the top...

...Literally.

Top Lane

As one of the weakest roles that League of Legends has had for a few years, Riot Games is looking to shake the game-changing impact that top laners can have in the later stages of the experience. To do this, their RoleQuest has been significantly tuned to buff them extremely, making them a menace once they've completed the requirements.

Top's Role Quest rewards everything to do with experience, with completion giving the player a large chunk of EXP and increasing gains from all sources: Epic monsters, minions, and the like. While this might sound useless to some, this should give Top Lane a great opportunity to outscale everyone in the game and out-level, especially for those who favour split-pushing and reaching their end-game.

It's in this that the Role Quest also excels: Top Lane won't stagnate at Level 18 like other champions, but instead, it will have a larger cap. While the specific level limit hasn't been shared, this should be a huge buff to champions who want to be ahead, or — in Udyr's case — could benefit from the extra levels.

To round out the large list of changes, Top laners will now be able to get a free Teleport Summoner Spell after they complete their Role Quest, meaning that champions who favour going Ignite or Exhaust can still have global map presence. If, instead, you already have Teleport as part of your main Summoner Spells, you'll get a large shield after completing the cast.

This is all working in tandem with shifting the focus from consistent team fighting to allowing others to individually fight. With shifts to turrets and the Gold they give, it's the perfect opportunity to pick up a top lane champion who can split push reliably and apply pressure in weaker sides of the map.

Jungle

Jungle already has had a Role Quest for a while in the form of their individual pet, which eventually allows them to use Smite in PvP. Riot Games has acknowledged that Junglers, at the moment, have a lot of impact in games, and they don't want to affect the way this works too much, instead opting to lift up the weaker roles.

That doesn't mean that Jungle is left wanting for changes, and while there have been a slew of Epic monster buffs that favour Junglers, the main change here is traversal itself. Aside from getting your pet (a huge plus, really) and being able to use Smite against champions, Junglers will now get extra Gold and XP from large monsters, alongside bonus movement speed whenever in the Jungle domain.

Though it's not game-changing, and Riot Games has acknowledged that they'll be nerfing some elements of the role, it's still a great opportunity for Junglers to get a bit of a lead and earn additional experience for playing well. It's a positive that's counteracting some of the nerfs that the role will be getting to balance it out a bit, all the while keeping Role Quests tonally fitting to one another.

Mid Lane

Middle is in a bit of a balanced spot, currently, as it hasn't been mentioned as among the weakest roles in the game (Top and ADCs get that) or the strongest (like Jungle and Support). Still, to not leave Mid players lacking, a new Role Quest was added to keep them engaged in the gameplay and not leave them out of the new mechanic.

Though Feats of Strength is being removed, which was introduced in 2025 Season 1 Act 1: Welcome to Noxus, Mid players will still be able to acquire their own Tier 3 boots, making them the only lane to do so. This means that though they're being retired everywhere else, Mid should still be able to benefit from some of the strongest ones.

This means that the following boots are now exclusive to Mid Lane:

  • Armored Advance
  • Chainlaced Crushers
  • Crimson Lucidity
  • Forever Forward
  • Gunmetal Greaves
  • Spellslinger's Shoes
  • Swiftmarch

Support

As part of the "strongest roles" in League of Legends (who would have thought we'd see the day?), Support isn't getting a substantial amount of changes, much like Jungle. Equally so, however, they're still included in the overall rehaul to Role Quests, and they're still getting some buffs to call their own.

Aside from the Support item that they can get, the economy is being fixed somewhat for these players. First, the much-needed inventory space for Control Wards is being given in the form of the Role Quest Slot, meaning that now, upon completion, Supports no longer need to sacrifice one spot for wards (a very much needed change since forever, essentially).

However, it's all about economising for Support: the role is also getting a buff to passive Gold gain to accommodate for the amount of wards that they buy, all the while giving them a discount on them. This means that Control Wards will be more acquireable and abundant for supports, which means more competition for vision.

ADC

It's finally time for the "C" in ADC (carry for the uninitiated) to stop doing so much heavy lifting, as marksmen will now get a massive boost with Role Quests. While ADCs won't be benefiting from a much-needed boost in defences and might still go pop too early, completing the RoleQuest should start an inevitable snowball towards imminent victory.

The Role Quest for ADC gives them a burst of Gold, and then increases the amount of Gold they get from minion kills, champion kills, and assists. The extra surge of Gold should ensure that carries trying to hit their powerscale point should reach it faster, but that's not all.

The Role Quest Slot for ADCs will be used for the boots, meaning that everyone in the Bot role will now be able to, essentially, carry seven items instead of the previous limit of six. This means that the role can now reach higher strengths near the late game, offering them the opportunity to pick up an extra item at no risk to their kiting or chasing potential.

Why Role Quests Are Important

Season 1 2026 Theme Gameplay More Dev Update League of Legends 8 38 screenshot

Role Quests might be one of the most innovative things that Riot Games adds to League of Legends, as it doubles down on role identity. But furthermore, this approach should help everyone keep focused on their objectives to reach a new form of powerscaling.

What's even more interesting is that this will be a reliable way for Riot Games to nerf an entire role without causing ripple effects. No more nerfing one item because it's spiralling in the wrong lane, as instead, tweaks to the overall numbers to the Role Quests can buff or nerf entire lanes without needing to touch champions in the slightest.

While it's not a perfect solution, and we're likely seeing the Alpha stage of this mechanic, if done correctly, it could be a new era of balancing for League of Legends as a whole. If you're interested in trying it out, keep your eyes peeled for 2026 Season 1 Act 1: For Demacia sometime in January.
