Maniac Mansion Creators Unveil New Game Via Kickstarter

Maniac Mansion Creators Unveil New Game Via Kickstarter

The creators of point-and-click, with Maniac Mansion on the Commodore 64, have opened a Kickstarter for their return to the genre.

Thimbleweed Park, a return to 1987, is a spiritual successor to Maniac Mansion and The Secret of Monkey Island, the pair's most loved titles. In it, you control five characters as they try to make sense of a body literally washed up in the river, as well as their own mysteries. They are two figuratively washed up detectives, rich girl Delores, dead guy Franklin (no, not the same dead guy) and Ransome the clown.

The game will apparently last many hours, with multiple endings and the ability to switch between the characters whenever you like. An easy and a hard mode, hundreds of locations to explore and a retro look will remind you of the time that this kind of game came on a floppy disk.

The stretch goals include localisation, a mobile version of the game and full voice acting.

The campaign launched a few days ago and out of the $375,000 they're asking for, they already have $395,258.

Yes, that's right, they have all of their funding with weeks left. It ends on 18th December, so get your pledges in here while it's running.

Pledge rewards get you many awesome things. You can be absolved for the guilt of pirating Maniac Mansion or Monkey Island, way back when, your details in the in-game phone book, a t-shirt - maybe even a boxed version of the game! Which means a literal cardboard box! And, of course, $20 upwards gets you a copy of the game.

So go ahead and back this project, for some good old fashioned point & click adventuring.
