Red Candle Games Offers Update on Delisted Horror Title Devotion

Earlier this year Taiwanese developer Red Candle Games found itself in the centre of controversy regarding its recent horror title Devotion. While the first-person psychological horror game was met with a positive fan and critical reception upon its release, a hidden joke in the game poking fun at Chinese president Xi Jinping led to the game being promptly removed from Steam, effectively making it impossible to play.

Since then, Red Candle Games has remained quiet on the subject until a recent statement posted on the official Twitter account publicly acknowledged the controversy. The statement reads “While mediation is still in process, Red Candle’s co-founders have reached a unanimous decision to not re-release ‘Devotion’ in the near time, including but not limited to obtaining profit from sales, revision, IP authorization, etc. to prevent unnecessary misconception.”

While this might sound like a bleak outcome there’s a slight silver lining, with Red Candle Games promising “If, in the future, the public would be willing to view this game rationally and allow us the opportunity to rebuild trust with our players, Red Candle would reconsider re-releasing ‘Devotion’.”

While it doesn’t seem like Devotion will be returning to Steam in the near future, there’s hope that a re-release will eventually come to fruition with Red Candle reassuring players that this incident was unintentional, and won’t be repeated in the future.
