Resident Evil Village's Adrenaline-Pumping Reveal Trailer is Here

The next mainline chapter in Capcom's legendary Resident Evil series was revealed at Sony's 11th June PlayStation 5 event. Resident Evil Village (AKA: Resident Evil VIII) will release in 2021 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and PC (via Steam). Check out the game's new horror-direction in the reveal trailer above.

Following on from the events of Resident Evil 7, players once again take control of unwitting hero Ethan Winters, still from a first-person perspective. This time, Ethan is thrust into a Gothic horror-inspired nightmare set in an isolated, "snow-capped locale". A familiar face or two promises to return alongside all manner of never-before seen foes. (werewolves, anyone?) After the last two series entries being remakes—albeit excellent ones—this is a true follow-up to one of gaming's horror staples.

Despite some iffy framerate quirks marring the visual quality of the trailer (likely due to rendering difficulties stemming from Capcom employees working from home), there's no denying the sheer graphical fidelity on show here. The thought of being pursued down a blustery Gothic hallway by a terrifyingly detailed werewolf with matted fur is already sending making my hairs stand on end. And after the success of Resident Evil 7, I can't be the only one with renewed faith in long-running horror franchise.

Resident Evil Village releases in 2021 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and PC (via Steam).

What a weird and inspired new direction for the series. I wasn't expecting another big departure straight after 7, but I'm completely on board for it.

In the same way that Assassin's Creed lost a lot of its original identity in favour of becoming "historical action game X", Resi looks to have  lost its purely zombie-focused identity in favour of a"horror game X" kind of thing.

Whether that's good or bad is down to the individual, I guess...

To me, Resident Evil was never strictly a zombie game. Sure, zombies are the most common enemy type in early entries, but even the first game has giant spiders, a giant snake, sharks, a killer plant, Hunters, Chimeras and the Tyrant. RE2 feels like even less of a zombie game to me, with the narrative focussing way more on the Umbrella conspiracies and BOW's, and mutated William Birkin being the recurring boss enemy.

So long as the mainline instalments continue to focus on BOW's, I'll embrace them as being "Resident Evil".
