Riot Games Announces Official League of Legends Classic Mode Coming in New Video
League of Legends has been around for 16 years now. With the original launch featuring 40 characters (a roster now ballooned to 171), it's been an insane few years for Riot Games, which has been working on the experience, adding new champions, reworking them, changing the map...
Truthfully, the way League of Legends works and looks today is just a far cry from what it used to be. There have been over 100 gameplay updates, big and small, with over 200 total updates overall, which have tarnished the history of what the original League of Legends used to be.
Plenty of veterans remember the days of old, with old champions before their reworks (minor or large), who yearn for the opportunity to play their favourites once again. For me, it was the updates for Graves, Galio, and Aatrox, taking place in 2015, 2017, and 2018, respectively, who were some of my favourite characters overall before they were looked at and changed.

It's worth noting: these updates are done to characters that need to be changed and adjusted accordingly. While it's a sad reality, the truth is that they're an important element of an ever-growing experience: remove what isn't working and change it into something that will appeal to a wider audience.
Well, during a new trailer titled "200 Years of Experience | Dev Update - League of Legends", we may have just been promised the opportunity to go back once again. The short, one-minute-long skit has Riot Pabro and Riot Meddler — the faces of Dev Updates — talking about the potential for "going back".
We don't know much, and there have been some leaks regarding some content, though nothing is final until it has been announced by Riot Games itself. But we do know one thing for sure: League of Legends Classic is on its way, either as a standalone launcher or a limited-time game mode.

We'll learn more about the upcoming launch during the MSI Finals, which will run on the 11th of July 2026. If you want to check out the video, you can find it embedded above!
