Self-Learning AI Taught Battlefield 1 Multiplayer

SEED, EA's game research division, has been developing a neural network, and it has been able to teach itself how to play Battlefield 1 - with some success.

The Search for Extraordinary Experiences Division (SEED) released a video at the GDC last week, showing off what they have achieved. The AI has learned how to play through trial and error, the only helpful hand provided in the match being yellow and green boxes giving ammo or health. EA says that this gives the AI "agents" (very Matrix-esque...) important variables that they use to adapt their behaviour.

It's not perfect, as you'll see at the end of the video above - seemingly joining in some sort of rave party at a mossy brick wall, no DJ to be seen.

EA will continue to improve its neural network, and I'm sure we'll be hearing more about it. Hopefully, they won't go too far and use it in robots that we can purchase to help us complete mundane day-to-day tasks, and then need Will Smith to turn up and save mankind when they decide to turn against us...
