Star Citizen Funding hits $100m alongside Alpha 2.0

With funding totalling more than twice the GDP of Tuvulu already, Star Citizen has become a license to print money for designer Chris Roberts. The game has been in development via crowdfunding on both Kickstarter and the game's official website for over 3 years now and a new milestone has just been reached. The game is now officially the first crowdfunded game to reach over $100 million. To put this in perspective, the second most lucrative crowd funding campaign, the Pebble Time Smartwatch, reached a little over $20 million.

In case you somehow weren't already aware, the game is a sandbox space shooter with mining, trading and FPS elements. It's made by the creator of the Wing Commander franchise and it's acquired over a million active players already despite still being in the Alpha phase of development.

Alongside this major achievement, there was another surprise for fans in the form of a new alpha build. This new version brings in new worlds, new star systems to explore and new ships. That's not all though as the promised First Person combat system is now in place, so you can be just like captain Kirk fighting on the planet if you want. If you're a citizen of the stars already then you'll find the new version in your launcher now.

Honestly, I didn't know a ton about the game before this...
