Stardock Entertainment has announced a new way for anyone to make, play, and share their very own videogame through the sandbox game, The Video Game Machine™. This game allows players to make their own videogame by taking care of most of the programming.
According to Scott Tykoslo, the lead designer for The Video Game Machine™, this is a game “that lets you pick a genre, choose some rules, and unleash your inner game designer.”
Included in the genres are side-scrollers, shoot’em up, and adventure games. Once a genre is selected, the game’s basic game mechanics will be taken care of. From there, the player sets up the game’s rules and selects the characters they want in their game. Characters include but are not limited to knights, superheroes, ninjas, cats, and more.
The goal seems to be giving players an easy way to bring their own ideas for a videogame to life through The Video Game Machine™. It will also include a host of pre-made games that players will be free to edit. Whether the players choose to use a blank slate or a pre-made game, they will be able to share their games online as well as download games made by other people.
“The game has been designed to be easy enough that anyone can create their own games while still having enough power that savvy gamers can create truly unique games with it,” said Tykoski. “We’ve made the art style match the 1982s/1992s golden age and included a lot of premade graphics sets so players can be up and making their own games in minutes.”
The Video Game Machine™ will go into alpha on the 29th of May 2019 and will include two genres: Platformer and Adventure. Future game designers can pre-order at Stardock Entertainment's site and gain access to the alpha once it is available.
