Witchfire to Sizzle with NVIDIA DLSS 3

The independent Polish developer The Astronauts has announced it’s bringing NVIDIA DLSS3 technology to Witchfire, its upcoming rogue-lite shooter. Witchfire is a first-person shooter and is currently on track to release sometime this year after starting development in 2015. Another interesting fact about the game is that it doesn’t have a single cutscene.

What’s really interesting, though, is this title’s new upscaling technology. Thankfully for us, Adrian Chmielarz, Creative Director and Co-Founder for The Astronauts, shared his perspective on how DLSS 3 will affect development:

You start the game, push all graphics options to the max. You enjoy it for a while, but then, especially if it’s an action game, you realise that the framerate is king. So you start lowering the quality of visuals in order to achieve that smooth gameplay. DLSS 3 allows the seemingly impossible, high framerate without compromising the visuals. A no-brainer for a game like Witchfire, which is both action and beauty.

So, according to the people behind it, NVIDIA DLSS 3 is a revolutionary breakthrough in neural graphics that massively boosts performance. It’s powered by fourth-generation Tensor Cores and a new Optical Flow Accelerator on GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs; DLSS 3 uses AI to generate additional high-quality frames with excellent image quality and responsiveness.

As for the game itself, Witchfire is set in a grimdark fantasy world in which a deadly war rages between powerful witches and the Church. In this alternate reality, witches are authentic and very dangerous— but so is the witch hunter. Armed by Vatican sorcerers, players wield an ungodly array of guns and forbidden magic as they combat dark terrors on behalf of their shadowy benefactors. The developer has also created Painkiller and Bulletstorm; the latter received a remaster for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, including a campaign-only version for the Nintendo Switch. Painkiller also received multiple expansions, including more single-player content, additional levels, and several playable characters.

The Astronauts was forced to shift development from arena-style fighting to open-level combat, but fans do not need to worry as there is currently no news of any delays. For further Witchfire news, including early access details, stay tuned to the GameGrin site!
