Hyper Hook Preview

Hyper Hook Preview

Who doesn’t like swinging around the place like a certain wall-bound superhero? Well, I didn’t quite like the related VR experience, but ever hopeful I gleefully downloaded the demo of Hyper Hook to experience the thrill of swinging through the air on a line! While the demo only gave me three levels, it was definitely an interesting look at what’s to come in the full version.

Each level takes place in a fractured landscape, which is basically a city block that’s been smashed and suspended in midair. It sees you trying to hit yellow orbs with your grappling line as quickly as possible to get the best finish time, and that’s it. It’s a really simple premise, and as someone who likes games with grappling hooks, especially if you can stick it on any part of a level, I’m into it.

While you can stand and play Hyper Hook, you can also play while seated. I mainly played while sitting in my gaming chair, so I could spin as required, but the game also lets you turn using the stick. You can change how much of a turn each press gives you in the menu, in case it’s too much or too little for your tastes.

One of the settings also allows you to change how fast the game plays. By default it was set to 80% and moved at a nice pace, but I did enjoy it more when running at 100%. It goes all the way down to 30% which gives each level a nice, relaxed feel as you drift through the air from broken wall to smashed road. It even slows down the timer, so someone running a level at 30% can compete with another player running at 100%, which is really awesome.

The only negative thing I have to say about Hyper Hook is how short the demo is! With only three levels — and no planned release date — has left me eager for more. I’m assuming that there will be some sort of leaderboard set up for the full release, so that you can truly compete against other players. But even if it doesn’t, it’s still fun to try and beat your best times.
