Polygod is a roguelike FPS on a procedurally generated map. A very difficult and challenging game, something that really tried to grab my attention. I mean, it did try and it tried very hard but I found the game more stressful than anything.

It is far from a bad game, filling a good niche and offering an intense shooter but it is just too hard for me honestly. I was expecting a hard difficulty spike, but nothing this extreme. Right off the bat I found the opponents to be rather bothersome; they offered no real chance for you to develop a strategy as they have none of their own other than to charge towards you and attempt to shoot you.

The difficulty only escalates as you encounter a larger variety of foes, such as some strange floating mouth that spits out multiple globs of acid towards you and try as you might it sometimes moves faster than you can track with your mouth! This is only on the first level as well.

To be frank the game felt a bit obscure, I had the constant sensation that I was missing something or skipping over something rather important that was almost critical to the game. Whatever it is, it is clearly in the achievements as it mentions things that I have no recollection of reading about nor understanding whilst playing the game. To say this is rather frustrating would be an understatement.

The graphics are nothing to rave about either, with nothing truly groundbreaking about them and simple designs thrown all around that, sadly, don’t look like they took too much thinking to figure out and/or construct in either case. I also quickly noticed patterns in the map generations and as I repeated levels and restarted from the very beginning I found that fairly often there would be parts of the map that were very similar. As it the cells for map generation were fairly large, something they should attempt to work on.

A huge positive for me however is the active development and they are constantly working on improving it, something that always gives me hope and is always nice to see! The developers are clearly passionate about the project and it does show in their work as they clearly want this game to be good and enjoyable.

So far? I would say this is one worth waiting for, but keep an eye on it if you are looking for something a bit unique as I couldn’t really find anything similar to it.
