Out Of Ammo Review

Out Of Ammo Review

Published by Zen studios, Out Of Ammo is available now on PlayStation VR. This title requires a few things before you can start playing the game. You will need, two move motion controllers as there are no other options to control your VR self, a PlayStation camera and the actual PSVR unit.

out of ammo review 8

This game was originally made for the Vive so it has room scaling. Unfortunately PlayStation VR has nowhere near the capabilities of room scaling, although you’ll still need a rather large play space to actually enjoy this game. There isn't an option to sit down and play, so this game will have you standing up and moving about a lot. While this method is very immersive in some VR titles, I felt that the game just didn't feel right with this method of play. Maybe it was the aliasing, or maybe just the bad quality of the game / controls, I don't know. To actually play this title I had to change my bedroom around completely, and even then I still felt restricted, so if you think that your bedroom isn't big enough ,which I had about 3-4 metres playing space, then I think you shouldn't pick this game up unless it's on a sale or you really want it and don't mind having issues with space.

The controls are some of the worst controls I have witnessed in a game since 2004, it lacks basic VR options like smooth turning which I have been used to since I first put my VR helmet on my head. Instead they opt for the option of angled turning which for some reason when pressed feels like you have moved ten feet around the room instead of simply turning yourself around.

out of ammo blends strategy and fps gameplay on ps vr

Finally after all those issues let's start talking about the actual gameplay, which- spoiler alert- isn't.. very fun at all. The game is a mix of real time strategy and FPS, where you can build defenses to kill the oncoming horde but can also switch to a soldier on the ground to get rid of the enemies yourself. I found myself mostly playing as an RTS mostly due to horrible frame rates on the ground and poor tracking of my controllers. I played this game on the original PS4 so these issues could be due to that, however if you look on Reddit you will find thousands of people who have the same issues that I had whilst I was reviewing this game. It shows how this game was a port and nothing more, with the developers offering a free game as a pre order incentive so people pre order before the reviews come out. There is also a co-op mode available which lets you play with 1 other player, however none of my friends who owned PSVR owned this game, so I was unable to try this mode out.

There are also 3 bonus modes which suffer from the same issues that plagued the main mode. However I found that these modes were more playable, due to the short length of these levels. The first of these is called overwatch, this mode has you, a lone sniper, pitted against a horde of enemies, after evacuating a downed helicopter. In Vertigo you rappel down buildings in a big action sequence filled with motion sickness. In Icarus you are a lone soldier who has just been downed behind enemy lines, do you have what it takes to survive and find your way home?

Out of Ammo (Reviewed on PlayStation 4)

The game is unenjoyable, but it works.

While this review is hugely negative, the premise behind this game was a great one. While the execution wasn't great I believe that this game came out of the door too early, if the game had been delayed until later this year who knows if it would if had the same issues as it does now. Out Of Ammo is plagued with bugs and other issues, the core game is still there. While there isn't a huge amount of content to sink your teeth into, there are some fun moments to be had especially with a friend.
