Rezrog Review

Rezrog Review

Rezrog is a roguelike dungeon crawler in the style of a tabletop game. You take control of a party of seven different characters, each with their own class and skills, and adventure to banish the evil within the world. The story might only be a backdrop to the gameplay but that is fine as you have plenty to encounter and discover. Though you have a party of seven characters you will only take one member at a time into a dungeon meaning you need to have your wits about you. Should a member fall it will be up to the other members to go forth and rescue the trap soul. Well, release them from prison to be more accurate.

With a paper board game art style to capture that feeling of playing your favorite tabletop game, Rezrog aims to deliver a dynamic and engaging dungeon crawling experience. To do this the title makes use of procedurally generated dungeons and items to help keep each run fresh and new. With no two of the hundred in game levels playing out the same, there is a lot of content to explore. To add to this every dungeon also gets a random modifier added to it when you enter it. These can range from extra damage, more experience points rewards, different art styles and so much more. There is also something new to discover as you explore, conquer and loot your way through this fun title.

The core gameplay of each of this dungeons will be played out in turn based combat. Outside of a fight your character can more around the dungeon board freely to explore, loot and manage their items. Once in range of a foe the game enters a more tactical mode of gameplay where line of sight and cooldowns are key. Early on you won’t struggle too much against foes but clearly you will find that you need to manage your actions carefully to ensure the survival of your character. Your trouble is rewarded though with experience and loot. All of which can be used to improve your party and have a better chance of success. Once more, skills can be managed in between dungeons and even leveled up give you a wealth of options to customise and build your characters how you best see fit.

Where Rezrog stands out is it’s ability to capture that tabletop feel both in style and gameplay. From the paper looking characters hopping about the dungeon, to the progression of characters and equipment. There is a lot of freedom to be found in how you develop your characters. Though it can feel like a grid having to take each character you want to level through dungeons again and again it pays for it in the later game. Additionally you don’t need to use all seven characters, the option is just there. I found myself mainly focusing on my warrior and rogue switching between them to keep their levels and loot fairly equal. You see Rezrog is a title you can pick up and play for an hour or five so you will always have time to play and feel like you are working towards improving your character.

One thing to note is that the game is not without its faults. Though a number of Steam users have reported game breaking bugs and save file corruption I did not experience any of these during my time with the title. The only bug I encountered on multiple occasions was when the camera felt the need to just do it’s own thing for a moment before returning to my character. The performance of the title is fine as well even if the load times can range in length. As a whole though Rezrog was technically stable and ran well during my time with it.

Rezrog captures something special in it’s gameplay and design. The art style is enough to catch your attention but the gameplay loop will be what keeps you coming back for more. Though not flawless in it’s execution there is plenty here to experience and love. If you are looking for a roguelike dungeon crawler you can pick up and play for a few hours or one to sink countless hours into, this is a title for you. With plenty of content, countless equipment and options to build your ideal hero, Rezrog is a title worth your time.
