How To Get The Croc Cap In METAL GEAR SOLID 3

The Croc Cap is a type of camouflage available to Naked Snake in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. So convincing is this silly hat that it can not only effectively disguise Snake in water-logged areas, but it can also deter dogs from attacking.

Now, to acquire the Croc Cap, one must be in the Chyornyj Prud region (a swamp near the beginning of the game). Here, Snake will be met with an expanse of murky, gharial-infested water, and he must cross it to progress the mission. We, however, want that sweet (albeit daft) fancy dress piece, so there'll be a slight detour.

From the beach, enter the water on the left side, avoiding the gharial directly in front of you. Know that the reptiles here, though numerous, are really quite docile, and they will not attack unless you get up in their business. With that said, to be better safe than sorry, they can be killed with a single headshot (from your 1911 pistol) when they raise said heads above the water — an action that they periodically repeat.

Also, just to clarify, killing these animals does not nullify a pacifist run. As such, wasting your tranqs on them for only temporary safety is pointless. Just shoot ‘em! Plus, the meat is great to have on hand for stamina recovery, so it’s a win-win scenario.

Anyway, getting back to my point about the left side of the swamp: enter it there, and then follow the bank around. You will very quickly come across some fallen logs and what appears to be a blocked path. It isn't blocked, though; the logs can be swum underneath. On the other side, climb the small slope out of the water, and make sure to burn off those pesky leeches! This new area is a tiny, raised section beside the swamp, and on your right will be a climbable tree wrapped in the usual vines.

From here, there are a couple of things to consider: the dense gathering of gharials below you, and the criss-crossing ropes above you.

Firstly, I'd end all the lizards with headshots, which will leave the water danger-free if you fall into it.

Once they've been dealt with, get to climbing. Just make sure that Snake has max stamina before continuing because his grip gauge is 1:1 with that stat, and he’ll need plenty of grip here! Now, after scaling the tree, walk along the branch to the first rope line. Then, drop to a hanging position and shimmy along it to where the second rope intersects is below. When you are directly above the second rope, allow Snake to drop. Be warned, Snake will not automatically grab the next rope, so you must hammer the hang button and have him catch it. Next, slide along this rope to a second small platform and the Croc Cap.

And there we have it, the Croc Cap is yours! Though it is a form of camouflage, it is actually a 1.6kg piece of equipment; thus, it must be taken from the backpack and placed in the equipment bar. At this stage, it can then be toggled on or off as desired.
