So I Tried… Grim Fandango Remastered

Each edition of So I Tried… I will try a game that I have never tried before. Will I find something new to love? Will I find something new to despise? I'll take a full half hour, no matter how bad it gets or how badly I do, to see if this is the game for me. This time I went for the PS4 version of Grim Fandango Remastered.

What I thought it was

Another one of Double Fine Productions’ titles that I missed, just like Psychonauts. Except it’s not like that at all, as it is a humorous adventure game along the lines of Escape From Monkey Island -- a point & click in 3D without a cursor. I’m not sure of the storyline, but it takes place in the Land of the Dead.

Ah, Glotis you terrifying guy...

What it actually is

A bit of a cheat I know, but it’s exactly what I said in the last section -- a humorous 3D adventure game. Playing as Manny, former top-dog at the Department of Death, you have to find the client which will help you either get back on top, or leave this job forever. Much more than your average Grim Reaper, Manny (and his co-worker Domino) collect souls to help people into the afterlife either by the four year trip, or the four minute trip to the ninth underworld: The Land of Eternal Rest. By collecting commissions from those who led a good life, such as nuns who can afford to go via the Number Nine train, Manny will be allowed to go to his final rest -- though he doesn’t really know how he landed a job at the DoD...

Most of the Trophys are quotes...

Will I keep playing

Heck yes, it’s an adventure game and therefore my cup of tea. It’s funny and charming, though it helps that I can put it in widescreen mode. I’m not a graphics snob, which is good as a lot of the effects haven’t been remastered, but that’s not to say I’ll keep it in Original Mode when the Remastered Mode is available. And I will have to replay it after I’ve finished, so I can listen to the developer commentary! I love that kind of thing. So yes, this is another one I will be finishing.

Still keep meaning to jump into this, vaguely remember watching my brothers play it back in the day on PC
