SoulQuest Receives Update Changing Major Content to Fit Player Feedback
SoulBlade Studio LLC and indie.io recently launched SoulQuest. This title gets players into the shoes of Alys, a warrior seeking to get her husband back from Morrigan, the goddess of death, as she battles through the Celtic pantheon to do anything that she needs to.
Originally a Kickstarter title, the game reached its crowdfunding goal at the end of its run. Two years after its Kickstarter success, developer Tomas J Pereyra has launched the experience on Steam, giving everyone a chance to check it out and enjoy the Devil May Cry–inspired gameplay.
The title has been heavily regarded at launch for its combat mechanics, which has been SoulQuest's main mechanic. It resonated strongly with its audience, as 91% of its 45 reviews since its release have been positive, though some of the negative comments echoed similar complaints.

Between the hectic and epic battling sections that players will undertake, there are moments of respite in the form of platforming sections with various hazards. World threats are present in combat, either in the form of falling rocks or spikes, and players are forced to manoeuvre around them, whether it's to get to the next arena or during the battles themselves.
This has been a major point in contention among both positive and negative reviewers alike. The latter category has used this as the game's main drawback, distracting from the fast-paced gameplay and preventing the player from reaching the next destination, especially in stages where they're judged by their speed, combat, and deaths in a single run.
Even the former category, those who have praised the experience, have shared a dislike for the mechanic, as the combat is the main focus of the experience. Moving from one end to the other breaks the momentum the player has acquired, instead being forced to do elaborate platforming sections that could break combat scores or end entire runs.

Despite being an intended gameplay feature meant to pause the player for a while and engage with some of the movement abilities that Alys can acquire, developer Tomas J Pereyra has addressed these concerns. In the latest content update, SoulQuest got a new game option that disables environmental hazards in its entirety, allowing players to enjoy the clean combat experience while not having to deal with in-between sections of platforming.
This feature has been implemented as of the latest update to SoulQuest, and it's available now! The title is at a 20% discount until the 15th of May, bringing its price down to £12.79.
