2024’s Biggest Esports Competitions

2024’s Biggest Esports Competitions

Every year the world of esports is growing and growing with not just playing numbers increasing but also fan engagement.

In terms of viewing numbers and broadcast deals, 2024 looks set to be a bumper year for esports as the incorporation of sports betting helps to take the industry to the next level (if betting on esports is your thing, you can access promos here.)

Without further ado, let’s take a look at some of the biggest and best esports competitions scheduled to take place in 2024.

1. The League of Legends World Championship

The LoL Worlds tournament is one of the most eagerly anticipated in the world of esports and excitement is already building ahead of the 2024 edition.

According to media reports the semi-finals of next year’s tournament could be held in Paris with the final set to take place at the O2 Arena in London.

DRX, formerly known as Dragon X are the current champions and will be going into the 2024 edition with high hopes of retaining the Summoner’s Cup and scooping the multi-million dollar prize.

This annual tournament regularly draws in over 100 million viewers worldwide and organisers are confident that the 2024 version will set a viewing record for an esports tournament.

LoL Worlds has been responsible for some of the greatest eSports moments of all-time.

2. The International
It feels strange to be writing about this now as the 2023 Dota 2 “The International” event is currently underway in Seattle.

Regardless of that though, The International is one of the biggest and most prestigious esports tournaments on the calendar and the 2024 version will no doubt be a massive event.

What makes The International special is how the prize money is made up. Players purchase a type of in-game battle pass called the “Compendium” and 25% from each sale is put towards the prize money for The International.

In 2021 the tournament broke records with its humongous $40 million prize pool.

3. Overwatch League Grand Finals

Earlier this month the Houston Outlaws took on the Florida Mayhem at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto, Canada for the chance to win the $1 million prize money. In the end it was the Florida Mayhem who came out victorious, recording a resounding 4-0 win over their beleaguered opponents.

Next year the tournament will be run for the seventh occasion and will be hoping to break yet more records, especially as this year’s tournament saw broadcast revenues skyrocket with millions of viewers tuning in to the action from all over the globe.

The Florida Mayhem made short work of the Houston Outlaws in this year’s tournament.

4. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Major Championships

CS:GO continues to be one of the most loved gaming titles on the planet and is still a huge draw in the esports game.

First held in Sweden in 2013, the Majors as they are now known, have spread out to gaming venues all over the world, most recently being held in Paris for the 2023 edition which was won by Team Vitality.

The venue of the next Majors is currently unknown but if recent editions are anything to go by, 2024’s Majors will be well worth a watch.

5. Call of Duty League World Championship

If you’ve ever played COD and fallen foul of skill-based matchmaking you might have felt that you were playing a totally different game to those slide-cancelling, hop-skipping, no-scopers who shred you at every opportunity.

Well if you think those 2 K/D players are on a different level, wait until you see some of the players who compete at the COD World Championships. These players are so good that just watching them will give you whiplash.

Atlanta FaZe, Dallas Empire, Los Angeles Thieves and New York Subliners are the teams most likely to be battling it out with one another for COD supremacy in 2024.

No matter how many JGod and IceManIsaac videos you watch, you won’t be able to pull off any of these plays.

6. FIFA World Cup 2024

Almost every single entry thus far on this list has been from super similar games so let’s finish up on something a little bit different – FIFA.

Sorry, forgive us ‘EA Sports FC’. The soccer game is one of the most played and enjoyed sports titles on the planet and the search for global gaming supremacy starts from home with players competing to qualify for the World Cup.

The 2023 winner was RBLZ Gaming’s Umut who became the second German to win the competition, who will come out victorious in next year’s tournament?
