Short Thought: Why the new Mass Effect Trailer has me Excited

With the fall of the Reapers The Alliance has now set its sights on other galaxies. In the trailer just released for Mass Effect Andromeda, BioWare shows off stunning new graphics, a non-Sheperd male protagonist, lots of planets and the return of the beloved Asari.

After watching the trailer, several times, it appears there is a focus on new alien races, as well as a title given to the new protagonist, the Pathfinder. This combined with the different landscapes and planets leads me to believe that the game may have a heavy exploration aspect. The previous Mass Effect titles had little in the way of exploration. Which was a good thing, it allowed the game to focus on the characters, scenes, and quests that make the series so addicting.

BioWare has already confirmed that Mass Effect Andromeda will be an open world game. I’m sure everyone’s biggest concern is, how open world is it? With No Man’s Sky still fresh in everyone’s mind I’m sure players are coming to realise that “open world” doesn’t necessarily mean “good”. In the previous titles players were able to mine planets in each system, while this was extremely time consuming it didn’t at all break the flow of the games. It worked to find materials and a number of side quests. Hopefully the exploration will simply be a way to complete objectives, find quests, initiate conversations, and view the wonderful landscape BioWare intends to provide. I’m sure many players will agree that we’ve had enough of games that force us to explore simply for the sake of exploring.

Mass Effect Andromeda is to be released spring 2017. I hope you are as excited as I am.
