Colorcube Review

Mixing colours is a standard task for most people these days, more so those who are into the arts or at least painting. That said though, in the current age of digital work and hex codes it is a fair question to ask if the understanding of colour mixing is less known than it might have been a few years back. Regardless of this and if you paid attention during your art classes, Colorcube makes use of this concept and presents it in a captivating and interesting mobile game.

The set up is simple, work your way through the many levels that the game offers by recreating the shape that is displayed at the top of the screen. What makes it a challenge is that you only have a limited number of pieces, each a different shape, and need to match the colours that are shown in the image. To do this you simply tap a piece and cycle through the three primary colours, red, blue and yellow. By doing so you start to blend the colours that overlap and make use of the color wheel that is the foundation of all colour theory.

Colorcube makes good use of its touch-based controls as well, allowing you to easily tap, slide and even rotate pieces without any trouble and move at a pace that is comfortable for you. The difficulty starts to ramp up fast though as levels require more complex solutions which will test your problem solving ability and understanding of the colour wheel. To aid in your search for the solution is a gorgeous soundtrack that is a joy to listen to both during and inbetween levels.

What makes Colorcube so engaging to play is not just the core concept or the gentle controls but rather the lack of any real sense of pressure. There are no timers here nor is there a limit to how much you can play with no penalty for failure. It is about you, the puzzle and your own sense of time. You could spend a few minutes or half an hour on a puzzle, that is fine. You either complete it or you don’t, it’s that simple. This is a mobile game that embraces the act of losing yourself in a compelling game and captures it perfectly.
