NASCAR 14 Is Not Coming To Next-Gen Consoles

The latest title in the NASCAR franchise, NASCAR '14, will only launch on current-generation platforms because next-generation market share doesn't yet justify the cost of development according to Ed Martin, Eutechnyx's EVP.

In May of last year Sony announced that Gran Turismo 6 would debut on the PS3 rather than the PS4 because of the "current console's install base". This logic still stands and is the reason NASCAR will be coming to PS3.

The PS4 has already sold over 4 million units, a million more than the Xbox One, but this figure is paltry compared with the 80 million PS3 units shipped to date. Comparing this market to the development cost means that a PS3 release is the most sensible course of action right now. Martin explains:

It costs us about $6 million to develop a next-gen version of NASCAR. You have to sell an awful lot of copies in order to meet the development costs, on top of all the licensing. There are about 4-5 million worldwide combined units of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, so it just doesn't add up for us right now. We own the rights, and we absolutely have plans, but it won't be later this year.

- Ed Martin, Eutechnyx's EVP.

NASCAR '14 is said to feature official teams, tracks and drivers from the sport. A NASCAR Highlights mode  will even let players race in real-life scenarios from NASCAR's current season. The game will also include a career mode as well as a league competition with rankings, statistics and challenges.

NASCAR '14 is due for release on Xbox 360, PS3 and Windows PC on 18th February.
