Sir Clive Sinclair to Launch new Spectrum Model

With such a rich heritage, it's no wonder that the Sinclair Spectrum range of home computers still have a dedicated following of hardcore fans. Last year, a hugely successful Indiegogo campaign brought us the ZX Spectrum Vega. A direct-to-TV console that contained over a thousand Spectrum games to play on your TV like in the good old days (just without cassette tapes for loading) in the modern day.

That though, wasn't good enough for Retro Computers so now they are releasing an expanded, newer version. This time round though, creator Sir Clive is on board from the outset as a member of the team. They've also brought in the design talents of Rick Dickinson, who was the Industrial Designer for a number of the Spectrum models, including the iconic ZX81.

The new machine promises to be a powerhouse mix of new and old technology. With the same thousand-odd games pre-installed and support for modern TVs, it's not too distanced from the original Vega. The differences came in the form of some additional buttons and connectivity, as well as a full blown LCD screen to play anywhere you like. The expandable memory allows you to load any Spectrum game that you like which isn't already on the machine.

It's only been 4 days and the campaign on Indiegogo has already smashed its £100,000 target. In fact it's more than doubled it and there's still a month left to go! You can get your hands on one of the first units to be produced for £100, with an estimated delivery date of September this year.

Sir Clive Sinclair himself is fully on board. In the campaign, the technology veteran stated that “The present surge of interest in retro products inspired me to plan the Vega+ as a handy games console which can be played anywhere.” With a cost of under a penny a game, you can't fault the value of the system either. Of course, as a descendent of one of hte first affordable home computers, we'd expect nothing less.

I may need to try and convince my fiance to let me buy one of these, they look ace. And cheaper than a Spectrum 128k back in the day too!

I don't remember enough about playing the Spectrum. I remember the games, but not the experience. Are there enough buttons on the Vega to play all games?

For the games they include, yes. It looks like it will have a USB port so hopefully that means you can plug in an external keyboard for anything that needs more keys (text adventures etc)
