ProtoCorgi Demo Preview

ProtoCorgi Demo Preview

Last week during the gamescom event, a lot of cool indie games were shown. Being a huge retro game fan, I was particularly interested in a game put out by Kemono Games that featured an adorable corgi with a jetpack called ProtoCorgi. I’ve always loved shoot ‘em up games like Gradius, and parody game Parodius Da on the Super Famicom, so it was clear that I had to try this demo out.

In the main menu settings you can choose your difficulty and how many lives and continues your corgi will have. No Konami code needed here! The demo has you flying through one level of the game, it’s short but you definitely get a good feel of what the full game will be like. When you complete the level, you will unlock new abilities and items that you can use when you retry that demo level again. I replayed the demo numerous times trying to get onto the high score board for points earned or the board for the number of fruits you were able to collect. The Super Nintendo-like graphics were bright and colorful, and even when the screen was full of enemies and bullets, there was no slow down or lag.

This demo had a few surprises I wasn’t expecting. ProtoCorgo wasn’t your usual horizontal shooter, it has you flying down and up into new areas full of enemies that will test both your shooting and maneuvering skills. It also features a very unique attack, instead of using your usual weapons, you have a spirit animal to attack with, a wolf that you can throw at your enemy. I was also excited to find that when you lose a life, you don’t start off with the base weapon again, you can quickly grab all the powerups you had before and continue on playing with all the cool items. As cool as the BARK attack is, I was quite partial to using the laser, so I was pretty excited to see I could easily get my weapons back.

ProtoCorgi is super cute, charming and captures all the things you love about classic shoot ‘em up games, and adds to it. It is definitely a must-play demo! I personally can’t wait until the full game is released for the Switch and Steam in November of 2020. Will you join the bark side?
