Six Couples Co-op Games For Valentine's Day

Six Couples Co-op Games For Valentine's Day

That time of the season (when the love runs high) is soon approaching, and what better way is there to spend your valentine’s day with bae in the digitised realm of videogames!

Whether it’s stress-inducing, problem-solving mania, an adventurous frontier into the unknown, or an escape by way of a soothing siesta from the outside world - here then are six cooperative games for folks to play together this valentine's day.

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime

1 Lovers

(1-4 Players)
Microsoft Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch

Cruise around the cosmos with your significant other(s), another couple, or a third and fourth wheel liberating captive bunnies and spreading love and peace across the galaxy together in your space-submarine!

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime expands the foundations laid out by the classic arcade shooter Asteroids, into a co-op action-adventure crew management fusion. At any time, one person could pilot the ship, your partner can man the guns, while another controls the shields - switching roles whenever you see fit. Love long and prosper!

Portal 2

2 Portal

(2 Player Co-op Campaign)
Microsoft Windows, Mac Os X, Linux, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360

Nothing says “love” more than being a pair of lab rats in a clinical, often dilapidated testing environment. Being subject to constant brain-bending and fatal challenges would leave the best of us traumatised; though these trials can also serve as a great tool for better communication, problem-solving, and general trust together. Call it trauma bonding or teamwork, it’s all apples and oranges - am I right?

So why not spend your valentine’s at the Aperture Science Enrichment Center? You’ll be GLAD you did! (Terms & conditions apply. Aperture Science is not liable for any break-ups, divorces, injury, or death before, during, after, and/or alter-dimensionally.)

Snipperclips Plus: Cut It Out, Together!

3 Snipperclips

(1-4 Players)
Nintendo Switch

It’s not often that you will be actively encouraged to let your partner shape and purge who you are into their ideal for the sake of progress… in fact, unless it’s only for the betterment of your wellbeing - that shouldn’t be the case at all! Luckily, you have an outlet for that in Snipperclips!

Use each other's 2D bodies to chop and trim one another as to solve puzzles, be it gouging a hole in your partner's head to transport a basketball, or be whittled down to a fine point to press a finicky button-down a thin pipe... Had we not had the context to what the game looks like; you’d think this was a game in the Saw movie franchise.

Untitled Goose Game

4 Goose

(1-2 Players)
Microsoft Windows, macOS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One.

Thelma & Louise, Bonnie & Clyde, Jessie & James… the names of notorious partners in crime that’ll echo through the annals of time. And up there with the greats, is goose 1 and 2 (or “Honk & Henk” as I like to call them).

There’s something about terrorising a quaint English village by being obnoxiously loud, entitled, and generally messing with the townsfolk that screams top tier “Karen” energy. Though that's fun to do as a goose on your own, misery loves company! So let’s ruin people's picnics, together.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

5 Animal

(1-8 Players)
Nintendo Switch

Near. Far. Wherever you are; being with your favourite villager on your own (not-so-private) island makes for a wonderful alternative for quarantine date night. Taking a tour of each other’s havens, going bug-catching & fishing with the bae, soaking in the culture at the local museum, planting a tree in memory of this special day… it’s up to you how you wish to spend it!

New Horizons, or any multiplayer accessible Animal Crossing game is definitely the choice for a cosy, Pinterest inspired blanket fortress cyber-date with your loved ones… namely Isabelle.

Stardew Valley

6 Stardew

(1-4 Players)
Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch

If you’re looking for a good “living off the land” type farming RPG adventure, then you’ll find Pelican Town to be a delightful slice of rural life. Growing fruit and vegetables for the festivals, getting chummy with the locals, spelunking and killing slimes - it’s quite the studio ghibli dream!

You can even get married and have children with your player two and any eligible bachelors & bachelorettes; though it’s ill-advised if either one of you gets jealous at all of any pixelated partner! Stardew Valley offers a tranquil respite for those looking for an alternative to Minecraft or Don’t Starve Together.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS a.k.a. VALENTINE’S HARD MODE

7 OverCiv

Overcooked! 2 & Civilization VI
(1-4 Players) & (1-4 Players on Consoles / 1-12 Players on Computers)
Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch

Do you think love can bloom, even on a battlefield? Be it in a restaurant that makes Gordon Ramsey’s Hell’s Kitchen look more like The Great British Bake Off, or colonising the world together for 5-10 hours; forever being on the fringe of a world war against each other - Overcooked! 2 and Civilization VI are wonderful multiplayer experiences...

But depending on how well you take high-pressure situations, potential sabotage, and seemingly avoidable losses; best to skip these titles, before you start hating both the game and the player.

Valentine's Day
So what are some of your favourite co-op games that you’d suggest for couples in and outside the valentine’s season?
