Freebie Feelers… Grow Up

Freebie Feelers is a series where we download the free monthly console-specific or newly released free-to-play games to test their worth. This series will contain some useful information as well as plenty of personal opinion. While these articles may not be reviews, we hope that you will be able to use them to help decide whether that free download is worth it.

What is it?

The sequel to the well received Grow Home, Ubisoft Reflections’ Grow Up kicks things up a notch. Whereas the original had BUD (the protagonist) trying to get into space and return to MOM with a seed, a mishap in this sequel sees BUD rebuilding MOM when she gets scattered across a planet.

More third-person shenanigans are in store as you climb, jetpack and launch yourself across several different biospheres in search of ship parts and energy crystals.

Collecting a certain amount of crystals will upgrade Bud, allowing him to fly longer and higher, and gain a glider. There are also challenges that reward you with costumes for BUD. Rather than being purely cosmetic, they allow him to jump higher, or turn day into night for spotting crystals more easily.

You can grab it on Xbox One through Games with Gold until 31st July.

What did you think?

I enjoyed the heck out of my playthrough. It only takes about six hours to complete the game 100%, but heck, at least I wasn’t bored. There are 18 varied achievements, including one for orbiting the planet whilst curled up into a ball, and unlike some games I really did want to complete all of them.

Is it worth downloading?

It’s well worth downloading. It’s £7.99 ordinarily, so you might even decide to buy it on another platform after you’ve completed it on Xbox. You don’t have to have played Grow Home to be able to play Grow Up, though if you enjoy this you might want to check it out too.
