Freebie Feelers is a series where we download the free monthly console-specific or newly released free-to-play games to test their worth. This series will contain some useful information as well as plenty of personal opinion. While these articles may not be reviews, we hope that you will be able to use them to help decide whether that free download is worth it.
What is it?
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is the latest - and last - entry in the series to be directed by the legendary Hideo Kojima. The game is set after the events of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes and before the very first game in the series. After a nine year coma players take control of Punished ‘Venom’ Snake and set out to rebuild what was taken from him and put together his private army once more. Being a mix of action and stealth gameplay, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is a massive, open-world game where players can unleash pure tactical espionage operations in whatever way they see fit.
What did you think?
As a long time fan of the series and the work of Hideo Kojima, being able to experience the final chapter in the series is fantastic. The game boasts not one but two massive open-world maps with over 50 missions and plenty of side content. You will find it hard not to spend countless hours in the game and its online base invasion mode. Stepping away from the standard gameplay of the series, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain gives players a lot more options to approach any given situation and has the enemy adapt to the player's actions. Like making head shots? Enemies will start wearing helmets.
The high degree of freedom that is given to players is simply stunning. Even for those who are not fans of the series or have not played a Metal Gear game before, this is a perfect game to jump into. With such a range of playstyles, gameplay systems and content, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is a masterpiece of gameplay design. Though the story is a bit broken and might not make sense to all players there is still plenty to enjoy.
Is it worth downloading?
Definitely a yes. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is one of the most fantastic examples of gameplay experience that players can find to date. Though it’s a massive game and takes a good amount of time to see it through to the end and unlock everything. This is a game everyone should at least download and see a few hours into because of how impressive it is. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain could very well be your next favorite.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is available now on PlayStation 4 as part of the PlayStation Plus lineup for October .
