Freebie Feelers... We Are Doomed

Freebie Feelers is a series where we download the free monthly console-specific or newly released free-to-play games to test their worth. This series will contain some useful information as well as plenty of personal opinion. While these articles may not be reviews, we hope that you will be able to use them to help decide whether that free download is worth it.

What is it?

We Are Doomed is a twin-stick shooter, much in the vein of Geometry Wars. For the month of September it’s free on PlayStation Plus for PS4 and Vita. In classic twin-stick shooter fashion you pilot a ship with your left stick, shoot an energy beam at baddies with your right stick, and compete with friends online for high scores. There are 30 unique waves to complete as well as an endless mode.

What did you think?

The controls feel fine and there’s some nice variety in terms of enemies, but there’s nothing remarkable about the gameplay of We Are Doomed. What is remarkable, however, is the presentation. The visuals are striking: the colours are vivid, the animation is fluid, and the minimalist art style definitely makes an impression. Between the screen warping and the enemies bursting into pieces it can be a bit difficult to keep track of the action, but there’s certainly some impressive art direction on display. The visuals are complemented nicely by a smooth electronica soundtrack. There doesn't seem to be a large number of tracks, but the ones there fit well and don’t wear out their welcome.

The action can become pretty hectic.

Is it worth downloading?

The game is a nice little package that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with other games of its ilk in terms of gameplay and presentation, but it is a little sparse on modes. The longevity of the game depends entirely on your personal drive to beat a high score, and that’s what will determine whether We Are Doomed is a 20 minute game, or a 20 hour one. Either way it’s worth giving it a try.
