Freebie Feelers... Until Dawn

Freebie Feelers is a series where we download the free monthly console-specific or newly released free-to-play games to test their worth. This series will contain some useful information as well as plenty of personal opinion. While these articles may not be reviews, we hope that you will be able to use them to help decide whether that free download is worth it.

What is it?

Until Dawn is a horror based narrative title that focuses on decision making and the influences of those decisions. There’s also quick time events that have been layered throughout. Just like the choices, messing up quick time events can drastically change the direction of the story and the characters within it.

Opening Until Dawn

The basis for the main story revolves around a group of young adults heading to a cabin in the middle of the woods. The reason for their doing so is because of an annual get together, the last of which ended with the disappearance of two of them. The rest of the story holds many mysteries for players to solve, both in and outside of the cabin.

Until Dawn is exclusive to PlayStation and will be available for free on PSN until the end of July.

What did you think?

I thoroughly enjoyed Until Dawn from start to finish. There wasn’t any point during the campaign where I wasn’t on the edge of my seat, wondering where my actions would lead to. I was also impressed by the depth and lore that it carries with it, especially in regards to establishing what certain creatures can and cannot do before sending you out into the world. All that put aside, I think my lasting thought with Until Dawn was when I realized it was better than other titles that had attempted a similar approach. Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls are all well and fine in their own right, but Until Dawn is miles ahead when it comes to ‘engaging the player.’

Until Dawn 4

Is it worth downloading?

By all means. If you're a fan of atmospheric horror and tense gameplay, then Until Dawn is the game for you. Some may feel it draws too heavily on the Silent Hill: Shattered Memories method of horror, where the game psychoanalyzes you before throwing you into the fray. However, I feel this is untrue of the experience you're getting with Until Dawn. It may analyze you, but it does it in interesting and dynamic ways. Such as selecting who your favourite character is, even though you may have several at that point in the game. Honestly, this game does so much right, in such an interesting way. Frankly, I think you’ll be playing it until dawn.
