Short Thought- More Games that Nintendo Should Make for the Switch 2 Mouse
Here are some additional games that I think would work well with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con mouse control scheme that I didn't speak about in my first article. If you missed the first part, check it out here.
Mario & Wario was another game that came out for the SNES mouse, but this one wasn't released outside of Japan. In this Super Famicom title, Mario and his rival, Wario, have an altercation, which ends up with Wario throwing objects on our plumber's head, obstructing his view. As he can't see where he is going, you play as a fairy named Wanda, who uses the mouse to manipulate objects in the environment to make a safe path for Mario so that he can reach Luigi. If reached within the time limit, the taller Mario brother can help remove the obfuscating items, allowing you to move onto the next stage. This game feels like a mix of Lemmings and Mario vs. Donkey Kong, where you lead the mini-Mario toys to the goal. Puzzle games like this or Picross would work great with the point-and-click controls of a mouse.
My other choice may be a very obvious one, but I feel that the Metroid Prime series would be perfect for this type of peripheral. Use the left Joy-Con to move Samus around the environment and use the second Joy-Con like a mouse to aim your arm cannon and shoot by clicking the button on the side. I think this method would make your shots a lot more accurate and your reaction time faster. It could also be useful for when you have the Grapple Beam and are trying to grab onto a small target.
The final type of game that popped into my head was real-time strategy games like Metal Slug Tactics. I had the opportunity to play the game on both the computer and the PlayStation 4, and I found that it was a lot faster and more accurate to play using the mouse instead of a controller, especially when you are trying to select one unit to move.
It seems that the Switch 2 will support traditional USB mouse controls and a keyboard as well, as it was revealed in a presentation for Nobunaga's Ambition: Awakening Complete Edition by a Koei Tecmo producer. Being able to use these peripherals adds a whole new approach to playing the games on the Switch 2. It would be great to use your own mouse instead of having to drag the Joy-Con around and a keyboard for text entry instead of a controller!
I am excited to see all the things that this console will be able to do when it releases on the 5th of June.
