Each edition of So I Tried… I will try a game that I have never tried before. Will I find something new to love? Will I find something new to despise? I'll take a full half hour, no matter how bad it gets or how badly I do, to see if this is the game for me. This time I went for the PC version of Destiny 2.
What I thought it was
I’ve heard a lot about the Destiny games, so I’m anticipating a first person shooter with an awful storyline and amazing gunplay, that looks fantastic. But people seemed to think it was worth the £9 I paid for it, on the Humble Monthly Bundle as an Early Unlock, and that was a price I was willing to pay for it.
What it actually is
A first person shooter which doesn’t go out of its way to catch you up on things. Basically, there’s this moon called Traveller, which the Red Legion attaches a ship to, after staging an attack on the Guardian’s headquarters. The opening sequence sees you fighting through the headquarters to the roof, then through the flagship.
The opening sequence took up my half an hour, with some long cutscenes, some annoyingly long loading times, and a heck of a lot of shooting at enemies. I didn’t even factor in the 10 minutes I spent in the character creator, designing my warlock robot lady, nor the opening cutscene.
Will I keep playing
Since I went out of my way to buy it, I feel like I have to. It’s not the best game I’ve ever played, and I’m not in a hurry to return to it, mainly because of the enemies. They kept disappearing, and several just popped up right in front of me out of nowhere. The gunplay didn’t feel any better than Far Cry 5 (picking an FPS I’ve played recently), and although the game did look good it’s hardly made an amazing impression. If you’re on the fence about this, definitely wait for the complete edition which will come out when all of the expansions are released.
